Twelve months on the water around Komodo, read for a six-cabin phinisi

Updated 2 November 2026

The best time to sail Komodo by month starts with the dry season, April to November, when the sea is calmest. Elrora sails the 3D2N route on set dates from Friday, 6 November 2026, and July and August are open trips only. Below, each month in turn.

What each month looks like on the water

The year splits in two: dry from April to November, wet from December to March. That split is the first thing to learn, and the month table adds four more columns: sea, visibility, manta rays and crowds.

April, May and June are the calm, clear months, with the south-east wind only starting to build at the end of June. September to November bring the sea back down and visibility up. Those two spells are where most parties of a private boat find the easiest water. January and February are the other end: the roughest sea, the lowest visibility and the fewest boats, and the best months of the year for mantas.

These are general seasonal patterns, not a forecast for your week, and we say so once here so that we need not say it in every line. The captain reads the real sea on the day, and the captain decides which stop comes first.

JanuaryroughlowpeaklowwetWet season. The roughest sea of the year, low visibility and few other boats; mantas are at their best.
FebruaryroughlowpeaklowwetStill wet and rough, with the lowest visibility. Quiet anchorages, and manta sightings stay strong.
MarchmoderatemediumgoodlowwetThe last wet month. Fewer showers now; a moderate sea, clearer water, and mantas still around.
AprilcalmhighfairmediumdryDry season begins. A flat sea and clear water with a moderate number of boats; manta encounters thin out compared with the peak.
MaycalmhighfairmediumdryDry, calm and clear. Reliable weather for treks and reef stops, with a medium crowd.
JunecalmhighfairmediumdryDry and clear on calm water. From June the south-easterly picks up, a little more each week.
JulyroughmediumpeakhighdryDry but windier, and a peak crowd month. Visibility is medium and mantas are at their peak. Elrora sails open trips only.
AugustroughmediumpeakhighdryThe windiest dry month, with the busiest stops. Mantas are common, and Elrora sails open trips only.
SeptembermoderatehighpeakmediumdryLess wind than in August, and the water clears once more. Mantas stay at their peak and the crowd is medium: a strong month.
OctobercalmhighfairmediumdryHot days, a calm and clear sea, and the anchorages emptier than in high summer. Mantas are fewer.
NovembercalmhighfairlowdryThe end of the dry season. Calm sea, clear water and quiet stops.
DecembermoderatemediumpeakmediumwetThe wet season returns with a moderate sea and medium visibility. Mantas return; Christmas and New Year week fill the anchorages.

Padar at sunrise, month by month

Light moves through the year, and so does the Padar morning. Sunrise over Padar comes at 05:54 in January and 06:04 in April; July brings 06:18, October 05:39 and November 05:31. The table lists all twelve months. April to June sit close together, at 06:04, 06:07 and 06:14, so the early start barely moves in the calm months.

The walk starts about an hour before the sun is up. A wake-up that suits July is far too late for November, when sunrise comes almost 50 minutes earlier and the walk begins in full dark. The sun does not wait for the slowest walker.

Pick the month for the sea and the crowd first. Then read the sunrise line for that month. If the early start worries anyone in your party, tell us, and we plan the second morning around it. Short version: plan around the sea you want. Calm water and clear reef sit in the dry months, while July and August trade some of that for the best chance at open trips.

Dusk over Kalong across the year

Kalong is the dusk stop on the first day of the three-day route. Watch the clock at sunset: fifteen minutes later the flying foxes leave the mangroves. Keep the half hour after sunset free on day one; dinner can wait until the bats have passed.

Sunset falls at 17:57 in July, 17:55 in October and 18:27 in January. The span across the year is under an hour, but it decides whether the bats pass over your dinner or over your last swim. The table gives every month.

The boat spends the night where the weather and the captain decide that day. Nothing else about the night is fixed, and we do not write it as if it were.

Rough months and windy months, named plainly

Three spells deserve plain names. January and February are rough and wet, with the lowest visibility, and the harbour authority can suspend sailings in strong wind spells. July and August are dry, but the wind is the strongest of the dry months and the stops are at their busiest.

December is a moderate-sea month on paper. In fact the wet season starts, mantas return, and the last week is full of holiday travellers. March is the last wet month, with showers easing and the sea settling.

A rough sea does not mean no sailing. It means the captain may change the order of the stops, may shorten one, or may keep the boat in the lee of an island. If a sailing is cancelled outright, the terms page sets out the replacement boat or the full refund. We do not hide the wet months. We name them so that the choice is yours.

July and August belong to the shared trips

Elrora keeps July and August for shared sailings. In those two months the whole boat cannot be chartered. The seats are sold by cabin type, with other guests aboard and a minimum of three cabins for the trip to sail.

The dates are set and the route is the 3D2N. A party of two who want July should read the cabin fares on the departures page and choose a Master or a Deluxe cabin.

If your party needs a private boat in the peak season, choose a neighbouring month. June gives dry weather and calm water, and September gives a strong shoulder with mantas still around. A party that cannot move its dates should write to us early, and we will say which dates are open.

How early to hold the date you want

The month decides the sea, but the calendar decides the cabin. Your date is secured with 50% down. Settle the remainder no later than 30 days before boarding. Open-trip dates follow the sailing schedule, and the first is Friday, 6 November 2026.

For the peak weeks, write as soon as you know the month. That means July and August, the end of December, and the weeks around public holidays in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. The guide on Chinese holidays and the sea gives the dates that matter.

For the quieter months, a few weeks ahead is enough. Whatever the month, tell us the number of guests and which cabins you want, and we will answer in writing with what is free.

FAQ

Can I sail in the wet season, December to March?

Yes. The wet season brings short heavy showers and a rougher sea, especially in January and February, but sailings run and visibility is lower rather than absent. Mantas are at their best in those months. Stop order is the captain's call, and in strong wind the harbour authority can pause sailings.

Is the sea too rough for a phinisi in July and August?

Those are the windiest of the dry months, with a rougher sea and the busiest stops. A phinisi sails them, and the visibility stays medium. On Elrora those months are open trips only, so you book a cabin on a set date. The captain adjusts the stops to the sea.
