Before you fly: four things to settle, in the order you act on them
Updated 2 November 2026
A first trip to Indonesia for an Elrora charter needs three things settled early: entry (visa on arrival or an e-visa for a Chinese passport), a flight into Komodo Airport via Bali, Jakarta or Surabaya, and some rupiah in your pocket. Anything unconfirmed is marked verify before travelling.
Visa and entry for a Chinese passport
Start with the passport. Visa on arrival is open to nationals of 97 countries, and China is among them. The visa allows a stay of up to 30 days, and the same visa can be applied for online as an e-visa before you leave. The table lists the rules and how sure we are of each.
Your passport needs six months of validity from arrival and two blank pages, and the officer will ask for an onward or return ticket. An arrival card is required before landing, and the official one is free. Use only the government site, because other sites charge a fee.
The fee is shown in the table as it stood when we checked. Read the current figure on the official immigration site before flying, and treat each line marked verify as a prompt to do so. Holders of Hong Kong and Taiwan passports should read the rule for their own document, since we do not state it for them.
| Visa on Arrival (VoA) | Open to nationals of 97 listed countries, including most of Europe, the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Japan, South Korea, China, India and the Gulf states. Other nationalities apply in advance at evisa.imigrasi.go.id. |
|---|---|
| e-VoA | The same 30-day visa, applied for online before you travel at evisa.imigrasi.go.id. Once approved, you must enter within 90 days. |
| VoA / e-VoA price | IDR 500,000 per person; children pay the same. Fees can change, so check the official site before you fly. |
| Length of stay | 30 days from the day you arrive, single entry |
| Extension | Once, by 30 days (60 days in total), for IDR 500,000. Apply at an immigration office about a week before the first 30 days end. |
| Visa-free entry | 30 days, not extendable, for citizens of ASEAN countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam. |
| Passport | Valid for at least 6 months after your arrival date, with at least 2 blank pages |
| Onward ticket | Proof of a return or onward ticket is required for a VoA |
| All Indonesia arrival card | Free and compulsory. Fill it in within 72 hours before arrival at allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id or in the app; it covers immigration, customs and the health declaration. |
| Arriving in Labuan Bajo | Most visitors clear immigration in Bali, Jakarta or Surabaya and reach Labuan Bajo on a domestic flight |
| Bali tourist levy | IDR 150,000 per foreign visitor if you enter through Bali, paid at lovebali.baliprov.go.id. It is separate from the visa fee. |

Flights into Indonesia and onward to Labuan Bajo
Almost every guest reaches Labuan Bajo through Bali, Jakarta or Surabaya. Komodo Airport is the end of the line, and it lies 2 to 3 km from town, about ten minutes from the harbour. The table gives typical flight times from each hub.
Direct international flights to Komodo Airport are limited. Whatever a headline says, plan on a connection, and book the domestic leg on the same ticket where the airline allows it, so that a late first flight is the airline's problem and not yours.
Arrive the day before you board. Choose a flight home departing after 14:00 on the last day. The guide on reaching Labuan Bajo covers the routes in detail; this page covers what to check.
| Airport | Komodo International Airport, code LBJ |
|---|---|
| Usual connections | Bali (DPS), Jakarta (CGK) or Surabaya (SUB); Lombok and Kupang are smaller feeders |
| Flight time to Labuan Bajo | From Bali about 1 h 10 min to 1 h 20 min; from Surabaya about 1 h 30 min; from Jakarta 2 h 30 min to 3 h; from Lombok about 1 h |
| Airlines | Garuda Indonesia, Batik Air, Citilink and Indonesia AirAsia from Bali and Jakarta; Super Air Jet from Surabaya; Wings Air on the shorter island routes. Schedules change, so check before you book. |
| Airport to the harbour | 2 to 3 km, about 10 minutes by car |

Payment cards, spare cash and the rupiah in your pocket
The currency is the Indonesian rupiah. Cards work at hotels, with boat operators and in the bigger restaurants, sometimes for a fee; warungs, small shops and markets are cash only. Labuan Bajo has ATMs near the harbour and at the airport. Inside the national park there are none.
Draw cash before you board. A single withdrawal is limited and the machine charges a fee, so a few smaller transactions cost more than one larger one, up to the limit. Keep some rupiah for the small costs along the way, including levies and tips.
Tipping is appreciated and never compulsory. Look for a service charge on the bill before you add one, and give crew tips at the end of the trip, together.
| Currency | Indonesian rupiah (IDR); about IDR 16,000 to 16,500 to the US dollar and IDR 17,500 to 18,000 to the euro in mid-2026 |
|---|---|
| ATMs | BCA, Mandiri, BNI and BRI on Jl. Soekarno-Hatta near the harbour and at airport arrivals; none in the national park or on the islands. Take cash before you board. |
| ATM limits | IDR 1,250,000 to 3,000,000 per withdrawal; a local fee of about IDR 25,000 to 50,000, plus your own bank's charges |
| Cards or cash | Cards work at hotels, dive centres, boat companies and larger restaurants, often with a surcharge of 2 to 4 per cent. Small eateries, markets, taxis and small shops take cash. |
| Tipping | Appreciated, never compulsory. In restaurants 5 to 10 per cent when no service charge is added; for a boat crew, IDR 50,000 to 100,000 per guest per day is a common range. |

Sun, water and small remedies
Take the sun seriously. Wear a hat, use a reef-safe sunscreen and carry water. Tap water is not safe to drink, and the boat provides drinking water. Bottled or filtered water is the rule on land.
Bring your own medicines, in the packs they came in, and anything you rely on for stomach or motion. A pharmacy in Labuan Bajo stocks the basics, but the choice is limited. Mosquito bites can carry disease, so cover up at dusk.
Travel insurance with medical and evacuation cover is strongly recommended, because a serious case can need a flight out of Labuan Bajo. The emergency numbers are in the table, and we can give you the details of the nearest hospital on request. Keep a paper copy of your policy number with your passport.
| Insurance | Travel insurance with medical cover and emergency evacuation is strongly recommended; add dive cover if you dive |
|---|---|
| Private hospital | Siloam Hospitals Labuan Bajo, Jl. Gabriel Gampur, +62 385 2440 666; it has a hyperbaric chamber |
| Public hospital | RSUD Komodo, Labuan Bajo, with an emergency unit; no hyperbaric chamber |
| Pharmacies | Available in town with a limited range; bring prescription medicines and sunscreen from home |
| Emergency numbers | 112 general; 118 or 119 medical; 110 police; 115 search and rescue |
| Health risks | Dengue, chikungunya and malaria are present, so protect yourself against mosquito bites. Rabies exists in dogs and monkeys: seek care at once after a bite. |

FAQ
Do I need to arrange a visa before flying from China?
Not necessarily. A Chinese passport is eligible for visa on arrival for up to 30 days, and the same visa can be applied for online as an e-visa before you leave. The fee changes, so check the official immigration site before travelling, and carry proof of onward travel.
How much cash should I carry for Komodo?
Enough for the small costs the fare does not cover: levies, tips, snacks and a meal in town. You will find cash machines by the Labuan Bajo harbour and at the airport, none in the national park, so draw rupiah before boarding. Withdrawals are limited per transaction, so allow time.
