The Padar climb: minutes, footing and the hour to wake

Updated 2 November 2026

Allow 25 to 45 minutes for the Padar island hike up to the viewpoint, over built steps and loose ground, with three bays of differently coloured sand below. On Elrora Liveaboard's three-day route Padar opens day two, and July sunrise is 06:18.

Plan your Padar day

Timing the Padar ridge: minutes, steps, gradient

Padar is a walk rather than a beach stop. From the landing a path climbs through dry grass to the main viewpoint, taking 25 to 45 minutes, depending on the walker. Built steps alternate with loose earth and stone, so footing sets the pace more than breath does. The upper ridge takes longer, for anyone who wants it.

At the top, three bays lie below you, and the sand in each has its own colour. That view is the purpose of the stop. No dragons live on Padar, and there is no beach to swim from, so plan for the walk and for nothing else.

On Elrora's three-day route Padar opens the second day, before Pink Beach. If wind or tide calls for it, the stops change places; that decision is the captain's, taken that morning.

Padar at sunrise: when to wake

The walk begins about 65 minutes before the sun rises. Padar sunrise in July: 06:18. In November: 05:31. In December: 05:38. Your alarm moves with the calendar. The table lists every month. If you climb slowly, set off with the first group rather than hurry later.

The first stretch is climbed in the dark. Carry a small headtorch, and keep your hands free for the steeper steps. Take water, because there is no shop on the ridge.

Colour at the top depends on cloud and haze. We cannot promise a clear sunrise, and the three-day route holds one Padar morning. If the ridge is grey, the view is still there; it is only paler.

What to wear on the steps

Shoes decide the climb. Wear closed shoes with a grip sole; stretches of the path are loose and steep. A hat with a brim and a reef-safe sunscreen cover the exposed ridge, and a light layer suits the cool first hour.

Carry little. A small bag worn across the body leaves both hands free, and anything heavy can stay in the cabin. Phones and cameras belong in a pocket you can close.

Advisor's note. Sandals are the wrong choice for Padar, however short the walk looks from the boat. If anyone in your party has knee or ankle trouble, tell us before you sail, and we plan the morning with them in mind.

What the captain decides on the day

The captain decides whether Padar goes ahead and when. Wind, swell and tide can move the start, and the park or the harbour authority can close a stop at short notice. If that happens, the route changes, and we tell you in writing.

Nobody is obliged to climb. Walkers climb. Anyone who skips the climb stays with the boat, free to swim off the stern or rest in the shade. Each person has had the island in the way they chose.

The park ticket is paid separately from your fare: IDR 250,000 for a foreign guest. The park fees page sets out the other rates and what the ticket does not cover.

FAQ

How does a guest reach Padar from Labuan Bajo?

Only by boat. No road reaches the island, so Padar is a stop on the sailing route. On Elrora's three-day route the boat is off Padar early on day two, and the walk starts from the landing. The park ticket is paid separately: IDR 250,000 for a foreign guest.

What time does the Padar morning start?

Expect to set off on foot some 65 minutes ahead of first light: 06:18 in July, 05:31 in November. The wake-up call therefore moves through the year. The captain confirms the exact time with you, and weather or tide can shift it.
