Kelor: the short climb that opens the first day
Updated 2 November 2026
The Kelor island hike is a steep little climb, 15 to 30 minutes, to a lookout above the bay. Close to Labuan Bajo, it is the first stop on day one of Elrora Liveaboard's three-day route. It is a good first walk for a party whose legs have not yet been tested.
A short climb on the first afternoon
Kelor is a small hilly island near Labuan Bajo, and it is the nearest stop on the route. Open-trip guests check in between 10:00 and 10:30, and Kelor comes on the first afternoon. The exact hour depends on when the boat sails.
The short climb ends at a lookout above the bay. The hill is steep and the track dry, yet the walk is brief. It is the right size for a first afternoon: enough effort to wake the legs, and not enough to spoil the rest of the day.
Kelor is not a dragon site. The animals live elsewhere, and Kelor is only a hill and a view.
How long and how steep
The climb takes 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the walker. The hill is short and steep, not a long trek, and the path is dry. Sturdy shoes help, and sandals do not. The first section is the steepest part, so go slowly at the start and keep the group in sight.
The viewpoint looks over the bay and the boats below, and on a clear afternoon the light is warm. Stay long enough to look at it properly. The way down takes less time than the way up, but the loose ground asks for care.
The first day continues with a snorkel stop and the sunset at Kalong, so keep a little energy in hand. Kelor is the warm-up, not the day.

With grandparents and small children
A grandparent who walks steadily can take the hill at the pace of the slowest member of the party, and the group waits at the top. Someone who prefers not to climb can stay on the boat or on the shore. The fare is the same either way.
Small children can climb with an adult beside them, and the ground is dry and steep. A child of 2 or younger is not charged, and the full fare starts at 3. Carry a very small child on the steep sections.
Advisor's note. Kelor is the best place to learn how your party walks together. If the hill is hard for someone, Padar on the second morning will be harder, and we can plan around that before you sail.
Kelor compared with Padar for slower legs
Kelor needs 15 to 30 minutes. Padar needs 25 to 45 to reach the main viewpoint, with a longer ridge beyond. Kelor is shorter, and it is steep. Padar is longer, and it is a bigger view.
For slower legs the order helps. Kelor comes first, on the first day, when the party is fresh and the hill is short. Padar comes second, at sunrise, and the party can choose whether to attempt it after what Kelor has shown.
A party that finds Kelor comfortable can attempt Padar with confidence. A party that finds Kelor hard should plan to wait for the others on Padar's lower slope, or on the boat. Neither choice spoils the trip.
FAQ
Is Kelor hard for older relatives?
It is a short climb of 15 to 30 minutes, yet the hill is steep and the ground dry and loose. An older relative who walks steadily can manage it with sturdy shoes and a slow pace. Anyone who would rather not climb can wait on the boat or at the foot of the hill.
Are there Komodo dragons on Kelor?
No. Kelor is not a dragon site, and the walk is a short climb to a view over the bay. The dragons live on Komodo Island, which comes on day two of the three-day route, where a ranger leads every trek. Kelor is the place for a first look at the bay.
